Wild-Caught vs. Farm-Raised Fish

Wild-caught fish is expensive. In some cases, it can be upwards of $6 more per pound than farm-raised fish is. However, here are some reasons why you should ALWAYS get wild-caught fish over farm-raised fish:

  1. They are given antibiotics
    Because farm-raised fish are living in such crowded (and not always the cleanest) conditions, they are prone to getting diseases. Because of this, the farmers will feed the fish antibiotics. When you eat those fish, you are also eating all of the antibiotics they were fed as well.
  2. Less omega-3
    When farmed-fish first became popular, the industry claimed that the farmed fish still had just as much omega-3 as wild-caught fish did. However, studies have found that there is actually significantly less omega-3 in farmed-fish now (one article stated that this is because they are fed grain and soy feed.
  3. Synthetic pigments
    Especially in salmon, a synthetic pigment called canthaxanthin is used to give them their color. However, wild salmon normally gets this color by feeding on krill. Canthaxanthin has since been banned in the UK, but not in the United States.
  4. PCB’s
    A lot of farmed-fish are also contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s) which have been found to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing). Some articles say that it’s actually found 16 times more in farm-raised salmon than in wild salmon.
  5. Bad for the environment/inhumane
    Last but not least, farm-raising fish is terrible for the environment. Since they are often raised in a secluded part of the ocean, they can contaminate wild fish as well. Farm-raising fish has been linked to destruction of coral reefs, spreading of diseases to wild fish, and creation of a ridiculous amount of fish waste that settle on the seafloor (which can lead to a multitude of other problems). It’s also an inhumane environment for the fish to be raised in. There are many many other reasons why farm-raising fish is bad for the ocean and environment, but these are just a few.

Hopefully these short 5 reasons are enough to encourage you to buy wild-caught fish. Fish can be one of the best sources of protein, healthy fats, and omega-3, but not if they are farm-raised.
